General Description

The University of Cambridge ESOL was established in 1858 to set a standard of efficiency for schools in Britain. Today, Cambridge ESOL provides an assessment service at 5 levels of English as a Foreign Language. Among the many multinational companies that recognize Cambridge ESOL certificates for employment purposes are Asea Brown Boveri, Canon, Hoeschst, Lloyds Bank, Nestl¯, Price Waterhouse, Shell and Xerox.

The First Certificate in English (FCE) is the most widely-recognized proof of language ability at the upper-intermediate level. The Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) is gaining tremendous popularity as an assessment of advanced abilities. The Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) represents a very high level of language ability and is recognized as fulfilling English language entrance requirements by many universities in English-speaking countries.

You benefit by graduating with a prestigious, internationally-recognized certificate, either for employment purposes or for personal satisfaction. The exam is written at LSC.

LSC offers a full-time preparation course for the FCE at LSC Calgary, LSC Toronto and LSC Vancouver in 4-, 8- or 12-week options. Students at the 4- and 8- week entry dates join the 12-week classes in progress.

LSC Calgary, LSC Montreal, LSC Toronto and LSC Vancouver offer a full-time preparation course for the CAE on the same basis as the FCE.

LSC Toronto and LSC Vancouver also offer a full-time preparation course for the CPE in a 12-week module.

Course Content

LSC has chosen course books, audio and video cassettes specially designed for FCE, CAE and CPE test preparation. These materials serve to instruct students for the 5 papers set by Cambridge ESOL:

Paper 1 Reading Comprehension
Paper 2 Composition
Paper 3 Use of English
Paper 4 Listening Comprehension
Paper 5 Interview

Through a balanced curriculum, you expand and reinforce your knowledge of the various exam components. Practice tests and compositions are an integral part of the programme. In addition, you should be prepared to undertake approximately 2 hours of homework each day to supplement in-class instruction. Study and practice are key ingredients in preparation for the exam.

LSC academic staff will help you in choosing appropriate supplementary materials to improve your performance in areas of specific weaknesses. These remedial materials are available at LSC to ensure a complete preparedness for all 5 papers.
